Mexican Libertad Coins
The Libertad is Mexico's flagship coin and the only major world series still struck to the onza troy rather than a rounded gram weight. Casa de Moneda de México — the oldest mint in the Americas, established in 1535 — has produced it in gold since 1981 and silver since 1982.
What sets the Libertad apart is that it carries no face value at all. The coin states its weight and purity and nothing else; it is legal tender guaranteed by Banco de México against the market value of its metal content. No other major world series is issued this way.
The second distinction is the mintage structure. Production is set by demand each year rather than to a fixed schedule, so figures swing from hundreds of thousands down to a few hundred — gold production in 2003 fell to roughly 300–800 pieces per size. A 5 oz silver Libertad in MS 70 can carry a graded population in the low double digits.
This collection spans 1 oz, 2 oz and 5 oz silver, fractional and 1 oz gold, and both business strikes and proofs. Grades run MS 66 through MS 70 and PF 68 through PR 70 DCAM, in NGC, PCGS and CACG holders.
