The obverse carries a portrait of Lincoln by Justin Kunz, sculpted by Don Everhart, drawn from Daniel Chester French's seated figure in the Lincoln Memorial. The reverse, designed and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, sets the closing words of the Gettysburg Address within a laurel wreath, with Lincoln's signature incused on a banner below — "we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain."
The program sold out its full statutory authorization of 500,000 coins across both finishes, finishing at 499,934. The individual-coin allocation was gone roughly six weeks after the February 12, 2009 release. Few modern commemoratives reach their authorized maximum.
A note on the grade, because it matters when comparing listings: MS-70 is well populated on this issue. PCGS has certified 3,614 examples at MS-70 out of 6,380 graded — a little over half. This is a perfectly struck coin from a program that sold out, not a condition rarity, and it is priced accordingly.
