The Perth Mint released the 2027 Australian Lunar Series III Year of the Goat on 8 September 2026. Lunar coins always release the year before their zodiac year, which is why a 2027-dated coin is in hand now.
The 2027 Goat lineup
From the Perth Mint's own release schedule, the goat is issued across three metals:
- Gold — 10 oz, 2 oz, 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz
- Silver — 1 kilo, 5 oz, 2 oz, 1 oz and 1/2 oz, with a 10 kilo release still to be confirmed
- Platinum — 1 oz
The Perth Mint notes that not every size is available at launch, and that the schedule can change. Worth checking against their page before you commit to a particular size.
Why a goat year matters more than it looks
The Lunar series runs on a twelve-year cycle, so each animal comes around once per series. Across the three series that means the goat has appeared exactly three times:
- 2003 — Series I (1996–2007)
- 2015 — Series II (2008–2019)
- 2027 — Series III (2020–2031)
This is the pattern that catches collectors out. A new release generates attention on the animal, not just the year — and that attention lands on the earlier goats at the same time. Series I goats in particular were struck in far smaller numbers than anything issued today, and there is no way to make more of them.
If you are building a goat run across all three series, the window where all three are simultaneously easy to find is now, while the new one is fresh and the older ones are being listed by people making room for it.
What is different about Series III
Two specification changes are worth knowing if you are comparing a 2027 goat against a 2003 one.
The silver fineness changed. Perth Mint Lunar silver was .999 fine through 2016, then moved to .9999. A 2003 Series I silver goat and a 2027 Series III silver goat are not the same alloy. The gold has been .9999 throughout.
The designs are not variations on a theme either. Each series was drawn fresh, so the Series I, II and III goats are three genuinely different coins that happen to share a subject.
