About the 1947 Centenario
The 50 Pesos Centenario is the largest gold coin of Mexico's classic era and one of the most recognizable gold coins in the world. First struck in 1921 to mark the centenary of Mexican independence, it carries 1.2057 troy ounces of pure gold in a 41.6 g coin of .900 fineness.

The obverse shows the Angel of Independence, the winged Victory that crowns the monument on Mexico City's Paseo de la Reforma, with Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl behind her. The reverse carries the Mexican coat of arms. The same Winged Victory later became the face of the modern Libertad series, which is why the two coins look related — they are.
The 1947 date is the one most often seen, because Mexico restruck the 1947 Centenario in large quantities for decades afterward rather than dating new issues to the year of striking.
